Day 21 - Wednesday January 4, 2012

Oh, I almost forgot! Yesterday morning Bridgett seemed to be trying to mouth something to me. Then yesterday evening she mouthed something to Jenn. This morning she clearly was mouthing something to me over and over and the nurse saw her do it too! I can't tell what she is saying, but she appears to be asking me a question.

Glad to see that things are looking up. You have been in many prayers. Bridget might like writing on a dry erase board what she is trying to mouth. It was a great tool for us.

What happened?

On December 14, 2011 at about 5:15 p.m. Bridgett was traveling eastbound on her road bicycle on 800 South near Carterville Road in Orem, Utah. A westbound pickup truck did not see her and turned in front of her. Bridgett impacted the pick-up truck approximately at his front wheel and then his side view mirror hit her for the second impact. She was wearing a helmet and had the right-0f-way. Bridgett sustained a severe traumatic brain injury (including a left temporal lobe hematoma and shearing in the corpus callosum), neck fractures at C5 and C6, a broken cheekbone, a broken nose, four broken teeth, and aspiration pneumonitis. Bridgett was chewing gum at the time of her accident, which fell back in her throat, blocking her airway. She suffered from anoxia for approximately 20 minutes, until the gum was discovered. Her initial Glasgow coma score was 3. Additionally, when the doctors placed the shunt they pierced the dorsal midbrain and damaged her optic nerves. Although her injuries continue to heal, her optic nerves are still affected at this point. There is a possibility that she will need to have surgery on these optic nerves but they won't do that until one year after the accident.
